Tips & Tricks

Be aware of dates:

  • Newer material may not be declassified
  • Older material may not be available online
  • Certain databases only have certain ranges of materials

Be aware of keywords that might be relevant elsewhere:

  • “House” may trigger the “House” in House of representatives
  • "California" might trigger the designation of a representative not the reference to the state itself
  • Search phrases such as "Clean Air Act" with quotation marks around them to find those words in that order

Be aware of relevant or related Federal or State departments or agencies

  • Atomic Energy Act of 1946 or 1954 and the  U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
  • Oil Spills and the EPA
  • School Lunch programs and the Department of Education
