Santousho Map

This is one of the oldest Gaihozu at UW Libraries. This is an early example of the Japanese military conducting topographic surveys outside Japan.

Manshu Map

Shinkyo, Manchuria (新京, 満州)

Shinkyo (新京) was the capital of Manchuria (満州), located in Northeast China between 1932 until 1945.

Heiyo Chishizu, Shojo Map

The Heiyo chishishizu, Shojo (兵要地誌図, 諸城) map displays Japanese military information (in red) overlaid on an existing topographical map. This map was originally created by the Chinese Army and modified by the Japanese Imperial Army. The map is part of a series of Shandong Province (山東省) in East China.

This map is categorized as Military Secret (軍事秘密), level 4 of 6 under the Japanese Imperial Army's map secrecy classification system.

Tainan Map

This map was acquired at a store in Tokyo, and it is not a captured map.

Shin Koga Ryuiki-zu Map

This map shows the Yellow River basin after the Chinese Nationalist Army burst the levee on the river in 1938 to stop the Japanese army's invasion. This map was originally held by the Japanese East Asia Research Institute, or Toa Kenkyujo (東亜研究所).

Pre 1945 Hiroshima Map

Japan's collection of military maps included maps from the Japanese mainland, called Naikokuzu (内国図). The UW holds two different sets of Naikokuzu maps. One map set was created before and during the war, and another set was created after the war, under the instruction of the occupying Allied Powers. This map shows a pre-war Hiroshima City. The map is categorized as High-Level Military Secret (軍事極秘), level 5 of 6 on the Imperial Japanese Army's map secrecy scale. "AMS 998618" represents the Army Map Service's map accession number. The stamp on the bottom right of the map indicates the date (January 15, 1947) that the map was transferred to the Library of Congress to be processed through the Army Map Service's Depository Program.

Hiroshima After 1945

Created on the instruction of the Allied Powers occupying Japan, this map shows the post-war reconstruction efforts undertaken by the Allied Powers following the destruction of  Hiroshima's 1945 bombing.

Map Stamps

This red stamp indicates that a map was originally held by the Japanese East Asia Research Institute, or Toa Kenkyujo (東亜研究所).
The Library of Congress transfer stamps indicate the date of map transfer to the Library of Congress to be processed through the Army Map Service's Depository Program.
The Army Map Service organized captured foreign maps using AMS numbers.

Many of the Gaihozu maps include secrecy classification levels.

軍事秘密: Military Secret (Level 4 of 6)

極秘: High-Level Secret (Level 3 of 6)

秘: Secret (Level 2 of 6)

部外秘: Restricted (Level 1 of 6)
