Arctic Sea Ice and International Policy: Books

Repurposed course guide from 2020 Task Force (JSIS 495) section "Arctic Sea Ice and International Policy"

Using Books and Encyclopedias

Below you will find UW Libraries Search (for finding books), search tips, and selected reference and other books related to the topic of this course. Encyclopedias are good for getting background information, with articles typically written by specialists in the field (and edited by professional editors, unlike Wikipedia). Other books might include relevant information in long form, as opposed to shorter articles and reports. Use the table of contents and the index (and search function in e-books) to target the information you need.

Tips for Using UW Libraries Search

  • Try a subject headings search. Click on Advanced Search, then click on the down arrow in a search box to select "in subj." Possible subject headings include:
Arctic peoples - Arctic regions - Canada, Northern - Climate - Climatic changes - Environmental conditions - Environmental protection - Eskimos - Foreign relations - Geopolitics - Glaciers - Glaciology - Global warming - Human ecology - Ice - Inuit - Inuvialuit - Policy - Politics and government - Race relations - Sea ice - Self-determination, National - Sovereignty - Traditional ecological knowledge
  • Use quotation marks to search for a phrase. Example: "Self-determination, National"
  • Combine search terms with the connector "and" to reduce the number of results. Use the connector "or" to increase the number of results, for example: inuit OR eskimos.
  • Use * as the truncation symbol to search for the root word, for example, politic* will retrieve politic, politics, political, etc.
  • Use the facets on the left side of the screen (under Refine My Results) to narrow by: Available online; or Available in the library; or by Publication Date; or by Resource Type (Articles, Print Books, eBooks, Government Documents, Maps, etc.)

Selected Reference Books

Encyclopedias and other reference sources can provide background information on your topic and help identify key people, events and dates. Many encyclopedia articles will provide a bibliography or list of related readings that you can use in your own research.
