Teaching and Learning at the Campus Library: Teaching & Learning Program

Mission:

The Campus Library's Teaching and Learning Program collaborates with educators across the curriculum to foster in students the critical thinking and research abilities necessary for academic success, and to instill lifelong learning strategies which prepare students to be information-fluent global citizens.

Vision:

To accomplish our mission, librarians collaborate with faculty and staff to strategically integrate information literacy instruction across the undergraduate, graduate, and professional curricula. Information literacy is essential for the pursuit and development of knowledge in the 21st century, and includes accessing, analyzing, evaluating, synthesizing, and producing knowledge. These skills are best learned and retained when taught as part of the university curriculum and in conjunction with the companion skills of critical thinking, reading, writing, and production. They are developmental and must be introduced, applied, reinforced, and extended throughout a student's educational career.  

Librarians and faculty share responsibility for cultivating information literate students through utilizing a variety of instructional situations, methods, and technologies. Our focus is on teaching research as a creative and iterative process, shaped by analytical and technology skills. 

Students—both on-campus and remote—are the primary beneficiaries of our instruction program, which also promotes an understanding of the role of the library and librarians in supporting their critical inquiry and ongoing intellectual growth. We also educate students and faculty at the research help desk, in individualized consultations by appointment, and through participation in campus-wide educational initiatives. We strive to make each of these encounters an educational experience through reinforcing information literacy concepts from prior instruction and giving students further opportunities for guided practice.

For guidance in teaching and assessing information literacy outcomes, the Campus Library utilizes the Association of College and Research Libraries' Framework for Information Literacy and the UWB/CC Campus Library Learning Goals, along with appropriate institutional, academic program, and course learning goals.
