Health Studies: Library Workshop-McGuire

Library Workshop, on April 10, 2024 in room LB1-220

The web resources to be used for your Literature Review Matrix assignment are linked below.

1.   Review Assignments (Julie's Summary)

Details about the Research Proposal assignment are included in Canvas in the Home and Syllabus sections.

The goal of the literature review matrix is to collect and summarize all of the information you are collecting in your review of published studies.  As you work with the librarian and with databases like PubMed, your goal is to identify and summarize a minimum of SIX primary peer-reviewed studies.  You are welcome to review and include reviews and data and statistics from reliable sources like CDC, but this information will not count towards the minimum requirement.

2. Review of the "Library Activity 1: Interlibrary Loan Account Setup" homework assignment in Canvas. See the UW Libraries: Interlibrary Loan & Scanning Services guide for current updates on services (help guide).

3. Review of "Library Activity 2: Background Research Learning Activity" in Canvas. How did this go? See the Books & Encyclopedias page in this guide for a link to the Gale Ebooks resource. (Tutorial: How Do I Search In Gale eBooks?)

  • As you get started with choosing your research topic, it is helpful to do some background research to familiarize yourself to "the lay of the land."
  • Making sense of the scholarly conversation requires some guidance, and scholars have been studying topics for decades.
  • This can activity can help you discover search words you can use in PubMed.
  • As your topic develops/evolves, you may need to repeat this step of looking at background research.

4. Review the "Library Activity 3: PubMed Searching Learning Activity" quiz in Canvas. How did this go?

What questions do you have about PubMed?
