Architecture: Collection Guidelines: Architecture: Related Non-UW Collections

a. Related Local and Regional Collections:

• The Seattle Public Library (SPL) has a significant collections of books and periodicals on archtiecture. The SPL's Seattle Room has photographs, clippings, maps and other materials that document Seattle's early built history.  Local branches of the SPL also may have information on the buildings in the neighborhoods that they serve, and many maintain collections pertaining to the architecture of their branch. SPL also has online collections of maps useful to students of architectural history.
• The Seattle Municipal Archives has information on the city buildings and structures erected by the city. Some of this material can be accessed on line.
• Seattle's Department of Neighborhoods provides a database of historic buildings in the city.
• The Seattle Art Museum Dorothy Stimson Library maintains some material pertaining to architectural events staged over time by the museum.
• A microfilm library operated by the City of Seattle, Department of Planning and Development (DPD) has information on commercial and institutional buildings erected in the city.
• The Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) has a library that contains books on architecture, and has collected remnants of the area's built history.
• Headquartered in Tacoma, the Washington State Historical Society has many photographs and documents detailing the architectural history of the state.
• In Olympia, the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation has a web site filled with information on state architecture.

b. Cooperative Loan Arrangements

• The UW is a member of the Orbis-Cascade Alliance. UW faculty, staff and students may request materials from other Orbis-Cascade Alliance members through the UW Catalog..

c. Cooperative Acquisition Projects

• The University of Washington makes recommendations to the The Center for Research Libraries for the purchase of materials. Informal cooperative collection development with other Orbis-Cascade libraries is practiced on a minor level.  The Orbis-Cascade e-book project allows UW patrons to view/acquire electronic books that are accessible to and jointly-owned by all 37 member libraries.
